Shear knives forging

The forging of knives is another service offered by Technolit Int. Forging of knives is used in tool stock for manufacturing shears for cutoff machine-tools (guillotine shears). Maximum forging dimensions of shears are up to 3000 mm (118.11 in) in length, with the sections of 35 mm (1.37795 in) to 350 mm (13.7795 in) and of up to 1500 kg (3306.9 lbs).

Shears are forged of steel grades 8, 10, 9, 12, 52, 62, 45 and others.

The cutting of a shear blank is the initial stage of the forging. The blanks are cut either by a BAND SAW or a FLAME cutter depending on the intensity of the equipment use. Technolit Int. operates two types of band saws: MYT-1 (for the processing of blanks of the maximum diameter 400 mm (15.748 in)) and MYT-2 (for the processing of blanks of the maximum diameter 600 mm (23.622 in)).

The temperature of shear forging depends on the blank steel grade. For example, the steel grade 52 is heated to 1180 +30 (2156 +86 F). The forging temperature for the blanks of this steel grade ranges from 1180 -30 to 850 +30 (2156 -86 F to 1562 +86 F).

The forging of shears is carried out, depending on a blank weight, by a steam-air hammer with the weight of the falling part of 1, 2 or 3 metric tons (0.9842, 1.9684, 2.9526 long tons or 2204.6, 4409.2, 6613.8 lbs).

Forged shears of some steel grades (12, 52, 62) need to be slow cooled. Technolit Int. has a special slow cooling furnace therefor. After the slow cooling the shears undergo heat treating, and, depending on the steel grade, we apply NORMALIZING or ANNEALING for that.

The turnaround time depends on the amount of blanks to be manufactured (forged) and the specification complexity.

Acceptance by the Quality Control Department of the works completed is the final stage. All forgings are subject to allowances according to GOST 8479-70.
